In the new trailer for Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling’s Dr. Ryland Grace is trying to save the world — and he’s getting lots of help from his adorable alien buddy Rocky.
The new trailer for the adaptation of Andy Weir’s acclaimed 2021 novel of the same name finds Earth in a very precarious position. The sun is dying, and Grace, a molecular biologist, is the only person who may be able to help. But though he agrees to go to space alone in hopes of saving the planet, he meets someone on his journey: a rock-looking alien who, Grace learns, is actually a “brilliant engineer.” Apparently, this alien — who Grace dubs “Rocky,” for obvious reasons — is trying to save his own planet. Can Grace and Rocky find a solution to “save the stars"? Cue “Champagne Supernova” by Oasis as they race to find out.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from a screenplay by Drew Goddard, Project Hail Mary is already getting fans of the novel excited — particularly because of how close it appears to stick to the novel.
One fan wrote in the comments on YouTube: “This trailer honestly looks like the book jumped off the pages and onto the screen. Which it should. The book is absolutely perfect, nothing needs to be changed. I can't wait for this movie.”
Another added, “This truly looks phenomenal. It looks pretty faithful to the book so far, and I’ve cried just to this trailer so god knows what I’ll be like in the cinema!!”
A third complimented how “faithful” the trailer is to the “little details” of the book. “I'm kind of glad they showed so much of Rocky,” they added. “People will know exactly what kind of movie this is going to be and still don't have the major spoilers revealed.”
Gosling previously spoke about his excitement about the upcoming movie. “It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that’s kind of our bag,” the actor, who is also a producer on the film, said about Project Hail Mary at CinemaCon earlier this year, according to Variety. “This is why we go to the movies.”
Project Hail Mary hits theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026.
